Artist Statement
Attitudes reflect a reaction to and influence over any moment in time. Working for a gestural instant, the subject can communicate a point when we give in to the weight of our surroundings, or push against it and resist external pressure.

About the Artist
Jo’s work moves from direct perception to invention, using the physicality of painting to evoke gesture and impending action. She received her MFA from American University and has taught at Georgetown University, American University, and Maryland College of Art and Design, serving as an original member and twice as Head of Faculty at the Washington Studio School. Jo has exhibited at the Katzen Museum and Minėmå Gallery and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Vermont Studio Center and as Chair of the Advisory Board at the Washington Studio School.
