In this class, students will learn to pull (not copy) from photographic references, with the primary focus of evoking sensations of light and mood. Students will scale up art historical image references and add elements where needed. The instructor will share his personal archive of photographic references and students will be encouraged to start building their own archive. Reference images are meant as a means to a different end, thereby functioning as a preliminary sketch. Students will work on the same painting for multiple sessions with the goal of going beyond the original image, while emphasizing the dramatic effects of light. This class will require students to keep a sketchbook and to develop work on their own time. Working on larger-size canvases will be required.
Students will need to be able to print color images via an inkjet printer or have photos printed ahead of class sessions. (This can be done via photo printing services such as at CVS)

NOTE: Gesso Day is SEPTEMBER 16TH. Join us at WSS between 2-6pm, to learn how to stretch and gesso your own canvases and prepare surfaces for the upcoming term! RSVP is required to attend.

If you are unsure if a class is right for you, please read our Pathway To Sucess: A Guide or have a conversation with a Faculty member or our Head of Faculty before the first week of the 10-week term ends. Once the second week of classes starts, no refunds will be offered.
For Workshops, Artist Demos, and Short Classes (classes less than 10 weeks in duration) - only withdrawals more than 14 days before the first day of class – 100% tuition refund*
A $25 administrative fee is applied to all refunds.
